全長約104公里的秀姑巒溪源自中央山脈，是東部第一大溪，切穿海岸山脈一路奔流入海。溪水長年的切割侵蝕，切割出許多陡峭的峽谷，造成的曲流、河階等地形景觀，並將兩旁山脈的沉積岩石塑成變化萬千的景致，俗稱帝王石的巨石群潔白如玉，紋路如畫，人稱「秀姑漱玉」。
