「麻竹湖」位於公興村中部，因地勢低窪，加上早期盛產麻竹而得名（「湖」在臺語為「窪地」之意）。麻竹過去也是造紙及製作竹筏的材料，但後來麻竹的需求不如以往，現在以種植桂竹為主，為當地重要經濟作物之一。
